I recently reread The Forest of Hands and Teeth and The Dead Tossed Waves by Carrie Ryan and now I have zombies on the brain.
My mind immediately went to how I could help my family survive a sudden virus, zombie-like freakfest. Yes, I’m being totally serious. lol
There are a few things I decided I would have to have and do:
1) a cement wall that was engineered so that the zombies couldn’t climb it. Preferrably cement block. No holey chain link will do! Though, maybe at first. Until we could build our wall.
2) fishing equipment (we have lakes), vegetable and fruit seeds, and bows and arrows for hunting – I’ve never hunted before, but I don’t know how to make bullets, so a gun would be useless after a while. Not that I know how to make arrows, but I figure it would be a little easier.
3) Books. Lots and lots of books. I like my family, but I think hanging out with them for the rest of my time on earth would get a little dull at times. Plus, I’m a teacher, so I’d have to keep education alive.
4) Befriend a doctor. It would be a shame to survive a zombie attack only to die from something stupid. So I need to find a doctor friend to move into my compound. Plus, he could make sure we had antibiotics and stuff.
5) Lots of propane for things. I don’t know what as I don’t really use propane, but I think it would come in handy. Or maybe kerosene? For heaters.
6) A bunch of clothes in a variety of sizes. Shoes, too. Just because you never know what you’ll need.
Okay, so what am I forgetting? I mean, this is serious business, people!
Do you think I’m certifiably insane, now?

I must admit I’ve had the same thoughts ever since discovering the black & white classic Night of the Living Dead. :P In addition to the suggestions you already posted, I suggest:
*rechargeable batteries with a solar charging station,
*do-it-yourself wind turbines and small solar arrays,
*as many small solar-powered gadgets as possible (camping catalogues have lots of these),
*chickens and chicken wire,
*black-out blankets and sound-proofing materials to prevent attracting the notice of zombies,
*composting toilets,
*a medieval array of halberd-like weaponry so one person could spear the zombie while the second person chopped off its head,
*sewing supplies,
*camping gear and meet-up plan/location in case of bug-out,
*books like Where There Are No Doctors and Where There Are No Dentists in case the compound doesn’t have these,
*a stockpile of spices (also good for bartering with other compounds) and salt,
*home-brewing kits,
*lacking real (expensive) military-grade night vision goggles, cheap toy versions for kids can be surprisingly effective,
*a good book on herbalism and a collection of herbs and seeds for the family’s most common ailments,
*a loaded ipod and a solar ipod charger (gotta have music!).
I could go on and on and on, but I’m sure I’ve already proven that I’m slightly unstable and have entirely too much time on my hands. :)
Oh my gosh I think about this stuff all the time! Morbid but, you know, there’s no telling.
And man those books did a number on me. Could hardly sleep right for a week!
This one is my favorite:

I think you need to move into my compound! We’d have everything then! lol I didn’t even think about solar panel stuff. I’m going to turn into one of those weirdos that has a stockpile in my basement, “just in case.” :-P
Have you ever read the ultimate zombie survival guide? I don’t know if that’s the exact title, but it’s close. Some very interesting stuff in there. At first it’s just silly, but then you start to really make mental notes about things! LOL.
I think it’s disturbing how many zombie movies there are. You just KNOW someone in the world is trying to make a zombie. Better to be prepared for it! :D
This seriously made my day! I’m apparently not the only one who thinks like this. I mean, you never know right?
No, but I need to put that on my Amzon wishlist! lol
And we are all together in our ombie-fear, Sara. :D
ok, so i finally got around to reading this!! wow! i read those zombie books after watching 28 days and 28 days later and all of it kinda made me wonder…. i mean… what if zombies take over the world? if this happens, i am finding my way to your camp since you will have the best one around. we need to have a practice run and pretend that it has happened to make sure we are fully prepared. hahaha, jk.
love this blog and the comments!! it made my day a little brighter to know i am not the only crazy one that thinks of this :)
