This month’s blog chain (absolutewrite.com) is to list guilty pleasures. So now you get to see into my soul. And I was going to have these cute pictures, but the formatting is going all wonky. :(
Yep. I can’t help it. I won’t even begin to try and explain it because you either get it or you don’t, but yeah. Love it.
Number Two: Cupcakes/Cake/Cookies
I have an INSANE sweet tooth and I wish I still had the metabolism of my teenage self to compensate for it. Sadly…I don’t. So. That sucks.
No, not Survivor. Couldn’t really get into that. Give me American Idol, Project Runway, Big Brother (it is SO not summer without Big Brother), or America’s Next Top Model any day of the week. I just love seeing people’s dreams come true. Well, not counting Big Brother. I just loves me some drama. ;-)
My name is Amanda and I’m a Targetholic. I could spend hours in there and leave totally fulfilled, even with an empty cart. I seriously get a Target high. LOVE that store. Too bad their return policy stinks. But I can’t break the habit! I get the shakes if I go too long without a fix. And at Christmas time? *sigh*

Ditto on Twilight!! :) And cupcakes/cake/cookies!! I’m torn on Target though. ;) Such a fun list!!
Cake yes, cupcake also yes, cookies absolute yes, Reality TV OMG that’s a yes all the way. We don’t have Target in Canada and I cannot abide Twilight, so sorry but it make me cry and not in a good way. It is more like the tears I shed when I was forced to read George Eliot’s Middlemarch did when I was a girl in school.
I like your site.

Reality television? Seriously? The only reason that one format became so dominant over the span of twenty or so years was because of the writers strikes – the one back in the late eighties and then a few years ago are the two biggest developments in the rise of brain-dead formatting. If there was a single moment which heralded the popularity of the reality show it would probably be traced back to the quiz show hybrids – part quiz, part lifestyle investigation, completely inane – though I like to imagine that a smoky back room and large sums of money were involved.
There have been several rather interesting variations on a theme, though all reality television shows seem determined to follow a specific pattern. One observation I made whilst trying to get through a single episode of an Australian customs and immigration show was how dumb they expect the viewer to be. The same piece of information (I think it had to do with the guest cast… Uh, I mean a member of the public) whom the voice-over indicated was up to something in the opening credits. Then on their first appearance the information was imparted once more. And yet again before the ad break. Then yet again when the show resumed.
If I didn’t really care the first time, I surely couldn’t be bothered paying attention after I had heard the prattling fool say the same thing the fourth time. The voice-over isn’t the worst thing about those shows though… If you have had the pleasure of watching any medical fly-on-the-wall series’ you will have heard the gloating “look at the state of that guy” narratives as some poor chap has a metal pole removed from their shoulder. Or watching as animal welfare tries to save a dog – all the while accompanied by a commentary replete with ridiculous delight in suffering and pain.
Reality shows make my skin crawl. I would suggest that the makers of reality shows be rounded up and shot, but that would merely encourage some enterprising soul to make a reality show of the rounding up and executions. They would probably stick an irritating and unecessary voice-over on it as well. God, I feel really mean, but the fact remains – no good has come of the reality show as an “entertainment” save for increasing misery in the lives of people stupid enough to have their lives documented on screen. The analogy of bacteria in a petrie dish comes to mind…
Ha, like I said, you either love Twilight or hate it. I know there isn’t an in-between! lol
And Gary, just go ahead and *huggles* the reality shows. You know you wwwaannnaaa! :-P Seriously, the point IS that they are mindless, dumb, and do nothing to increase your intelligence. Sometimes, I just want to get lost in a stupid show that makes no sense. Yes, I waste an hour of my life, but my brain needs that rest occasionally. ;-) And hey, good has come out of them! Like, American Idol. Carrie Underwood is HUGE here now (legitimately). She’s country, though. Do you guys do country music in Scotland?
Now, you know I love Survivor but I also LOVE Project Runway. And cake. And Target. I don’t know how they do it, but I always leave Target having spent much more than I’d intended to. Are they pumping something in the air?
Too many of yours could easily (or were) on my list. I like that you mentioned Target. I thought I was the only Target junkie. LOL It’s a sickness, really. There’s one across the highway from where I work. If I have time for a lazy lunch, I make a beeline for Target–books, clothes, makeup, shoes, health products, fitness dvd’s and equipment…oh my!
Mmm, cake and cupcakes!
I’ve also been known to catch an episode or two of America’s Next Top Model, and I liked the first couple of season of Beauty and the Geek, too.
There is, surprisingly, quite a large country music scene in Scotland. There are a few bands which sound utterly American but are Scottish in origin, and some of the holdover from the line-dancing craze about fifteen years or so ago is still in evidence. The ‘straight’ country (the performers with a degree of respectability) are okay, but screeching idiots (such as Cotton Eye Joe and all the other horrible pastiches) get on my nerves after three or four seconds. There is a slim connection between the current US variety of country music and traditional British songs – which were, of course, taken to America by settlers and transformed into modern “country” through successive generations of performers.
Must admit, I do enjoy a good episode of Project Runway. And What Not to Wear. :)
Ooo…What Not to Wear! Another good one. I really hope someone nominates me. I need it. lol
Totally with you when it comes to Twilight but we couldn’t be further apart regarding Reality TV.
AMERICAN IDOL!!!!!!!!! Woot woot I love pointing and laughing at the failures. I’m so mean :P Did you see the Tiny Tim guy last week? He is a substitute teacher where I live. *dies of both shame and laughter*
I’m almost feel ‘guilty’ to admit here, I don’t like reality tv !! But am fascinated by your post and all the comments :-)
