things i’ve learned from tmz

December 31, 2009

Ok, I’m a celebrity gossip junkie.  I’ll admit it.  I really don’t know why, either, but I am.  I know they are real people and need their privacy, blah, blah, blah.  Become a lawyer, then.

It’s weird, because I’m not the type to get overly excited when I actually see a celeb. I mean, I think it’s cool, but I don’t try to attack all fangirl like or anything.  So, with that being said, let me share with you the things I’ve learned from the high quality television show, TMZ.

1) All the “I hate you paparazzi” is so fake.

I mean, yeah, people like Brad Pitt, etc. who are stars without having to be in the spotlight constantly probably really do hate them, but give me a big ole break if you honestly think Paris Hilton, Jon Gosselin, Kristin Cavallari, and other types wish the paps weren’t there.  If they weren’t, they’d be out of jobs.  I wouldn’t be surprised if they were the ones to call the paparrazi before they went somewhere.  How can I tell this from TMZ?  They freaking smile in the middle of their, “I hate you,” dance.  ANNOYING.  Why are these people celebrities anyway?

And this is especially true when people eat at The Ivy.  Heck, I think even I would be photographed at The durn Ivy.  What do they expect?

2) I never want to attend a celebrity party.

Everyone looks so fake and it oozes politics and fakity, fake, fake, fake.  So, I’ll pass, thanks.

3) The office looks like a super fun place to work.

So, yeah, all the celebrities hate you, but they sure do laugh a lot.  Looks like fun, personally!

Finally, one last note.  I think the show has made TMZ more responsible for what they publish, so I haven’t seen anything completely outlandish lately, so that’s nice.

Oh, and if I become all super star one day and you see me playing the, “I hate you,” game, I must really mean it because I will never (and I do mean never) stoop to the level some people do to stay in the public eye.  Insane.

The End.

pen & ink

December 26, 2009

For Christmas, I really wanted a Moleskine journal. I’m not sure anyone understood why because, well, it’s blank paper.  BUT, my mother came through and bought it for me – which I had an idea she would because she called me the other day and said, “So, if you were going to buy a journal for someone, would you buy the three pack of smaller ones or the one bigger one?”

I got the bigger one. ;-)

Why am I talking about this, you may ask? Until this point, I’ve done all brainstorming, writing, etc. on the computer. Last night was the first time I’d actually taken pen to paper to forumlate ideas. I’d been struggling because I knew I had some glaring plot holes and I couldn’t figure out how to fix them. Well, within 15 minutes I had all of them sewn up, just by writing it down, playing with different things, etc. It was so empowering!

So my suggestion to anyone who may be stuck is to write it out – not type it out. It really helped me, anyway!

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! Time to start thinking about those 2010 resolutions!

Seriously, I’m reconsidering this whole writing gig and am looking to train to be a ninjetty. Just remember, DON’T go ninain’ nobody who don’t need ninjain’.

sinful goodness and a craft

December 24, 2009

So, seeing as it’s Christmas time and all, I decided to bake some treats (yes, I waited until Christmas Eve, do not judge me).  I also decided to make a cute Santa plate for my niece and nephew (and I’m making one for my son).  So, I figured I’d show what I am doing with links, in case someone else is interested.

First up, my cute plate!  This is a crappy cell phone picture because, quite frankly, I’m way too lazy right now to drag out my big camera for pretty pictures.  Again, with the judging, let’s lay off, k? ;-)

A member of the mommy board that I help run posted the instructions which can be found HERE.  FYI, Hobby Lobby does not carry the Porcelain pens, but Michael’s does.  You just bake it after it has dried for 24 hours and then it is dishwasher safe!  Cute, huh?

Second, sinfulness in the form of popcorn.  Holy cow.  Again, another member from my mommy board posted this link (this is why I love my mommy board – they find all sorts of goodness).  It’s from the Our Best Bites blog (which is awesome, btw).  Here are their pictures because, like I said, I didn’t feel like taking pictures with my camera.  Don’t look too close because you will begin to be hypnotized by the yum.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday full of their own special goodness!

I ordered Hush, Hush for myself to read over the Christmas holiday, but flew through it in 24 hours.

Summary from Becca Fitzpatrick’s website:

For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She’s never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch came along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment.

But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora’s not sure who to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can’t decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.

For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen – and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.

This is one of the first books that I’ve read and kept thinking about after I read it in a long time.  There have been a lot of books that I’ve enjoyed lately, but nothing that’s really stayed with me.  I’m hooked on Patch, I can’t help it.  I mean, his name is Patch.  That just oozes sexy.

I thought the sexual tension between Nora and Patch was well executed and there weren’t any huge plot holes that I noticed (though with my speed read of it, I might have missed something).  I liked the play on the love-hate relationship weaved in this story because it was never pure disdain, even from the beginning.  Patch’s stalkerness (work with me on my invented vocabulary) was kind of weird, but taken in context with the story, it makes sense.

I do wish that I felt their relationship was based on more than physical attraction, though I know that it was supposed to, it just didn’t come across as clearly as I’m sure the author intended.  I wanted to know why Patch loved her, not just accept it at face value.  What made her different?

Hush, Hush gets:

4/5 Dancing Santas (because face it — dancing Santas are awesome)

Comments closed – You guys raised enough for a Hope Basket!! I’m rounding us up to $50!  I’ll make the donation in the morning.  Thanks everyone!!  I really enjoyed reading all the comments, too. :-)

Merry Christmas!!

Nathan Bransford posted today that he will be donating 50 cents per blog post to Heifer International, “an organization that works toxmas fight hunger by giving needy families around the world and in the United States livestock, training, or other assistance that helps improve their livelihood.”

I’m just a po’ (read that right…it’s po’ not poor…there is a difference) school teacher, but I know that people have it a lot worse off than I do, so I figured I’d join in.  I honestly can’t imagine what some people have to live through and it makes me feel blessed to have what I do.  Even if it’s only a small contribution, I figure every little bit counts.

For every post I get up until 8:00 pm EST, I’ll donate 25 cents $1.00* to Heifer.  If I don’t get enough comments, I’ll still donate as much as I can.  I can’t imagine it will get to this point, but I will have to close it at 400 comments just because I have to still be able to pay my bills this month! : -P

So leave me a comment with:

what makes someone talented?

December 20, 2009

This is something that has been plaguing me lately.  Mostly, because I’ve hit that moment of panic where I think, “I’m spending hours on this…what if I’m awful?!”

So, yeah.  That’s where I’m at.  Do I think I suck really bad?  No, but am I talented?  No idea.  Does anyone really know?  I’m honestly writing my stories for pure entertainment, but if someone else decides they like them and wants to publish them, then I’ll be thrilled.

However, as I’ve entered into the writing world and have started learning a lot about it, I’ve started putting pressure on myself.  I get nervous because I don’t feel like my stories are as clever as some, nor do I think my descriptions are as eloquently described as others.  But is that all there is?

Really, I just need to chill, but it does make me think – what is it really that makes someone good at this?  Is it the ability to create worlds, extensive language and vocabulary, voice, all of the above, a little bit of some, what?

What if you are strong in one area, but severely deficient in another.  Are you completely out of luck?

*Insecure rant over – here’s hoping I can look back on this post and laugh while I’m on my way to pimp my book on Letterman*

True story!

My cousin lives in Arkansas and also works at a retail shop.  One day, an older gentleman came by the store.  He was wearing red suspenders and looked suspiciously like this guy:

sc

She asked him if he would be willing to come back the next day and let her bring her children to meet him.  He said he would love to!  The one thing her daughter wanted for Christmas was a sleigh bell a la The Polar Express, so she said she was going to go to the local jeweler and see what they had.  She’d been looking everywhere, but couldn’t find a sleigh bell that was decent.

He said he would like to go with her and purchase the bell for her as a gift.  She tried to refuse, but he insisted.  He followed her in his red pickup truck (seriously, I couldn’t make that up if I tried), but the jewlery store didn’t have anything worthwhile.  They finally settled on a small silver handbell thing and had it engraved with her name on it.  Mr. Santa Man paid for it, still against my cousin’s objections.

The next day, he came back decked out in his Santa gear.  When it came time to do gifts for the kids, he said he had something extra special for Anne Marie.  He pulled out a box and in it was a true sleigh bell, still attached to a section of leather harness.  The underside of the leather was worn from use.

As you can imagine, everyone was in shock.  As far as I know, no one has seen him since.

I’ve actually seen the bell and if it doesn’t make you believe, I don’t know what would.

I’d love to write a children’s picture book based on this story, but seeing as though I have so many strikes against me (debut author/children’s picture book/holiday theme), I don’t think it’s really plausible.  Maybe one day!

Merry Christmas!

let’s talk sexual tension

December 15, 2009

I love me a book with some good sexual tension.  It’s an important piece of Vintage and I could really use some books with good loveexamples of it.  You know…all in the name of research.

I want it to build to the point where you want to shake the book and scream, “Just DO something already!!!”  But then, I don’t want it to drag on so long that it’s just frustrating.  The happy balance.

I can’t stand when people are all up on each other two chapters in, but I also can’t stand a constant cat and mouse game.  So much to consider!

So, any suggestions?  Comments?  Just feel like saying, “Wud up?”

Side note, my child is so adorable when he wants something.  He looks up at you with those big blue peepers and says, “Pwwweeeesseee!”  Who could say no to that?
